Subdued start to RAG week but fears over influx
Sligo’s RAG week got off to a subdued start with the town being quieter yesterday, Monday afternoon than at the same time in previous years.
However, there was evidence of a big influx of young people having arrived in town from other parts of the country. Housing estates where students live were packed with cars early yesterday morning.
And the fact that NUI Galway’s RAG week, which was due to coincide with the Sligo event, has been postponed, will add to the numbers coming to Sligo.
One resident who contacted the Sligo Weekender said: “People living around here are worried by the amount of outsiders coming in for rag week. They don’t care what they do because they are gone in a few days”
The students union at Sligo IT is making a big effort to avoid unruly scenes of previous years. And stewards from the union were out at 8am yesterday morning tidying up beer cans from Sunday night’s celebrations.
