Coolaney resident has lucky escape from shark
A Coolaney resident made national and international news last week when he had a lucky escape after being attacked by a shark while surfing in New Zealand.
Peter Garrett suffered 10 teeth wounds, each about two centimetres deep, in his leg when the shark grabbed him but he was fortunate to be able to shake it off and get safely to shore.
The 42-years-old New Zealander has been in Sligo for the 15 years and now lives in Coolaney with his wife Jenny and two children.
The attack took place on Monday evening of last week when he was surfing at of Taranaki in North Island, while on holidays in New Zealand.
The surfer has been speaking of his terrifying experience.
He said he was knee-boarding when he suddenly felt a bump to his board and a sharp pain in his leg.
“I looked down and there was a shark on my leg and I sort of yelled obscenities at it. I yelled at it to f*** off. But it came back and I kicked at it with my flippers.
“But it sort of came back again; I jumped off my surfboard…and kind of tried to hit it with my flippers and stuff and then it sort of disappeared.”
Two vets, who were also surfing, helped him ashore and treated him with iodine and other medicine they had in their Jeep.
