A new Aldi store is to open in Sligo in late May.The German owned E2 million discount store will be located at Cranmore Lane, to the rear of Saint Anne’s Church and close to Dunne’s Stores. A car park with 82 spaces is also to be provided.
Part of the premises was previously occupied by Rehabcare and in earlier years it housed the former Sligo Models factory.
The site is owned by Michael McGoldrick of Rhodaville, Ltd, Main contractor JJ Rhattign & Company and the architect is Arthur Gibney and Partners.
Much of the exterior work on the building has already been done but workmen will be busy indoors right up to the projected late May opening date.
Aldi had earlier planned to open a store near Roemer Furniture at Upper Pearse Road. But they were refused planning permission in 2006 on the grounds that it was contrary to the Sligo and Environs Development Plan.
They then made an unsuccessful appeal to Sligo Borough Council to have the restrictions lifted in the 2010 to 2016 plan.
