Shelly River boat race opens festival.

| June 28, 2012

THE Shelly River Boat Race is the grand opening event at this year’s Cairde Arts Festival. A massive and fun celebration of the Shelly River, the Model Boat Race takes inspiration from Jack B. Yeats love of model boats.

FACES: Plenty of colour expected at the Shelly River Boat Race.

Jack B Yeats was known for having a keen interest in model boats throughout his life. Together with his close friend and author John Masefield, they would construct, sail and often sink a great number of different vessels on the river Gara in Devon.

Their friendship was very much founded on a mutual love of the sea, pirates, ballads and children’s games.

“We don’t advise the sinking part but we do advise everyone to take a leaf out of Jack’s book and join in the sheer fun of designing and constructing your own model boat,” said a Cairde organiser.

Fantastic Prizes for the race have been sponsored by North West Adventure Tours and Lough Gill Tours.

This event will culminate in a free outdoor concert by The Katonahs, 21 Outs and Tabby & band from 9.30pm until late.

The concert will take place in a marquee in Stephen Street car park where there will be food and drink stalls so all the thirsty and hungry sailors can replenish.
