Sligo groups win at musical awards

Two Sligo musical groups were among the winners at the annual Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) awards held in the INEC in Killarney on June 16.

Sligo Musical Society and Sligo Fun Company picked up awards at the gala event.

The Sligo Musical Society won Best Visuals (Gilbert Section) for their production of “The Wizard of Ozz”.

The Society held off stiff competition in the Gilbert Section of 50 other societies with their stunning visuals which include costumes, props, make up and hair in their 2012 show.

Ray Lowbridge, a member of Sligo Musical Society, was on hand to pick up the award on Saturday night and it was his design of the spectacular costumes that help clinch the award.

The Musical Society also picked up Runner Up awards in the Best Choreography Category (for Melody Urquhart) and Runner Up in The Spirt of Aims Category for their “There’s No Place Like Home” theme for the show, sourcing all needs for this years production from Sligo based tradespersons and companies.

Not to be outdone, Sligo Fun Company’s production “All Shook Up” took the Best Choreography award (Sullivan Section) at the awards. Kelesa Mulcahy, a castmember on “All Shook Up” was in Killarney to collect the awards on behalf of choreographers

Mary McDonagh and Steffen Jorgensen.
