The SÓ Sligo Food Festival gets underway on Thursday next, June 15 and this year’s spectacle will be even bigger than before.
The festival was voted the Best Food Festival in Ireland last year by the prestigious John & Sally McKenna Food Guides. Centre Stage this year will be the talks, demonstrations and tastings by Sligo’s food entrepreneurs, chefs and producers in The Model and The Factory on Friday and Saturday evening June 17 and 18.
Among those who will speak is a new wave of local chefs: Eithne Reynolds (The Nook), Sham Hanifa (The Cottage, Floris Falafel) and Aisling Stone (The Grass Roof Café).
There will also be talks from seaweed expert Dr. Prannie Rhatigan, from Gaby Wieland of Neantog Kitchen Garden School, from Master butcher Adrian Sheerin and from The White Hag brewery.
Food lovers can quite literally get a taste of things to come from the SÓ Sligo Food Tapas Trail, which actually begins this Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11, and then continues on June 17 and 18,
The Food Tapas Trail will see small signature tapas available for just €5 from no fewer than 28 different pubs, restaurants and cafes in Sligo town – offering anything from wild Atlantic oysters to Polish dumplings to pavlova.
And in a specially erected marquee in Stephen Street Car Park, chefs will have a chance to compete in the World Irish Stew Championships, the signature event of the Festival, on Saturday, June 18.
