Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, but not when it comes to music. A six-piece traditional music ensemble will kick things off with the first trad night of the new year in the Hawk’s
Well Theatre on Sunday, January 11 at 8pm.
The Sea Road Sessions line-up comprises singer/guitarist Kris Drever, accordionist Alan Kelly, guitarist Ian Carr, banjo ace Éamonn Coyne, flautist/singer Steph Geremia and bassist Staffan Lindors.
Each are known for their distinctive character, innovative approach and striking musicality. Having frequently crossed paths in other projects, they now pool their formidable talents and diverse repertoires for this mouth-watering ensemble show.
Although there are now six, these musicians came into this project as three separate duos – Kris and Eamonn from Scotland, Ian and Staffan from Sweden and Alan and Steph from Ireland.
A shared love of Celtic music saw them perform at the same festivals and cross paths more than once. Closer ties followed. Kris Drever contributed the vocal track ‘Caledonia’ to Alan Kelly’s critically acclaimed ‘After The Morning’ album (2009).
Alan returned the favour guesting on a couple of tracks for Kris and Eamonn’s ‘Storymap’ album (2013). Ian Carr has performed with the Alan Kelly Gang and collaborated with them on the song
‘After the Last Bell Rings’ on their most recent album ‘The Last Bell’ (2014).
These six musicians offer up a perfect musical tonic to one another. Alan Kelly’s flair for composition, intertwined with Ian Carr’s inventive arrangements and Kris Drever’s avant-garde approach are complemented by Eamonn Coyne and Steph Geremia’s lilting, bouncy Roscommon and Sligo styles.
Steph Geremia’s soaring and heartfelt vocals also mesh seamlessly with Kris Drever’s iconic and stirring voice. Staffan Lindfors’s swinging bass style and melodic tone completes this project.
Catch this opportunity to see these remarkable musicians performing together at nine venues nationwide for their tour of Ireland before they finish off at the prestigious Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland.
Tickets for the show at the Hawk’s Well Theatre are €18 (€15 conc.) with a special price of €7.50 for Under 18s and are available from the Box Office on 071-9161518 and www.hawkswell.com
