Growing concern around public health issues and antisocial behaviour in derelict Barrack Street homes

DERELICT properties on Barrack Street in town have long been a topic of discussion among passersby and local councillors. Last June, the properties caught fire, raising safety concerns about the premises.

Since the fire, the properties have sustained further damage: a second door was kicked in, and another has been partially kicked in.

With a playground nearby, there are growing concerns that children may wander into the buildings; there are also fears the houses could become a location for antisocial behaviour, or a full-blown dumping ground.

People Before Profit, Councillor Gino O’Boyle, a local representative for the area, has long advocated for action on the derelict properties.

Speaking to the Sligo Weekender, he noted that Sligo County Council has submitted a compulsory purchase order for the site and will seek an update at the next Borough District of Sligo Municipal Meeting.

He stated: “ The longer these places go like that, the worse it’s going to get, along with the fire here, and places being kicked in. There’s also a rat infestation, which is affecting other residents in their own homes. It’s an eyesore.”
