Continuing its 70th Anniversary celebrations, Sligo Drama Circle returns to the stage of the Hawk’s Well Theatre this November with the Robert Harling comedy/drama, “STEEL MAGNOLIAS”. The well-known movie starring Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts is based on this play and it promises an evening of laughter and tears in equal measure. The cast has been rehearsing for months to guarantee their loyal Sligo audience an entertaining night of theatre.
The play follows the lives of six tight-knit women in Chinquapin, Louisiana, who regularly gather at a local beauty salon. Balancing hilarious banter with deep sorrow, the group navigates marriage, motherhood, and profound tragedy while drawing upon their unyielding, resilient friendships. Through their interactions in the salon, “Steel Magnolias” celebrates the unbreakable bond between the six extraordinary women who share life’s joys, heartbreaks, and everything in between.
Filled with sharp wit, unforgettable characters, and deeply moving moments, this beloved comedy-drama reminds us that true strength is found in compassion, resilience, and the friends who stand beside us through it all and it promises to be a sure-fire hit with Sligo audiences.
Director Ann Marie Byrne has assembled an experienced cast for the play: Órla Mc Sharry plays the role of Truvy, the warm-hearted owner of the beauty salon; Katelyn Rafter plays the role of Shelby, the determined, diabetic young woman about to be married; Sarah Ellis plays the role of Shelby’s sensible and protective mother, M’Lynn; Niamh Leahy plays the role of Annelle, the shy and nervous newcomer to the salon; Margaret Curley plays the role of Clairee, the wealthy widow of the former mayor; Ursula Smullen plays the role of Ouiser, the eccentric and cantankerous local curmudgeon.
