ProTek Medial announces 25 job losses

ProTek Medical has today, Thursday, announced a restructuring of its operations in Sligo which is expected to result in the loss of 25 jobs at the plant in Finisklin.

The company, which is a leading provider of engineering, cleanroom injection moulding and manufacturing solutions for the global medical industry, employs 166 people in Sligo.

Staff have been informed by the company that “after incurring significant losses”, it is introducing a cost reduction plan to “better align its cost base with its current level of sales”.

ProTek, which was acquired by Molex in May 2015, has said that restoring the company to profitability to support future growth will involve a combination of proposed redundancies as well as efficiency improvements at all levels throughout the plant.

They say it is expected that up to 25 roles will be impacted, subject to a 30-day consultation period with employee representatives.

ProTek has said that it is “focused on the future of its Sligo plant and it is committed to building capabilities that will prepare the company for profitable growth and innovative opportunities in areas such as connected health”.

“The company regrets the impact that this proposed decision will have on affected employees and it in no way reflects on the quality of their contribution to the business. The Company’s current level of sales and its financial position means it must consider these actions”, a statement says.

Jim Sheridan would love to shoot film in ‘stunning’ Sligo

By John Bromley

Acclaimed writer-director Jim Sheridan has said that he would love to be able to come and spend time shooting a movie in Sligo, which he finds “stunning”.

The six-time Academy Award nominee, known for films such as “My Left Foot”, “The Field” and “In the Name of the Father”, was speaking to the Sligo Weekender this week about his latest film “ The Secret Scripture”, which local cinema goers will be able to see from March 24.

The film, which stars Vanessa Redgrave, Rooney Mara and Eric Bana, is based on the award winning book of the same name by Sebastian Barry, whose mother Joan O’Hara was from Sligo.

The story is set in Sligo and the author has said that it was loosely based on a story told to him by his mother about a local woman.

Because of logisitical and financial reasons, the majority of the film was shot elsewhere but Sheridan revealed that he spent weeks in Sligo prior to beginning filming to get a feel for the place and to be able to recreate the locations eleswhere.

“I was down in Sligo on four or five different occasions. We travelled around quite a bit and looked all around Yeats Country, and went out to the lake Isle of Inisfree and all that.

“It is so beautiful. It is stunning. But we decided we would only be able to shoot so much of it there.”

A lot of the film is set in the fictional St Malachy’s mental hospital where the film’s central character Rose has been wrongly incarcerated for many years. It is squarely based on the old St Columba’s psychiatric hospital, now the Clayton Hotel

As part of his research, Jim Sheridan stayed in the hotel three times. “They were very good to us.”

A full version of the interview with Jim Sheridan can be found in this week’s Sligo Weekender- in shops now.

Antrim stun sloppy Sligo

Allianz Football League

Division Three

Antrim 0-11, Sligo 1-7

SLIGO’S promotion bid was knocked off course at Belfast’s Corrigan Park on Sunday when Niall Carew’s side sloppily lost by a point to Antrim, 0-11 to 1-7.

In a game spoiled by a crossfield breeze and tricky underfoot conditions, missed chances cost stuttering Sligo as a dogged Antrim ended the Connacht county’s unbeaten start to their Division Three campaign.

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division

Limerick FC 5, Sligo Rovers 1

SLIGO Rovers endured a painful start to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday night last when unexpectedly losing 5-1 away to Limerick FC at Markets Field.

In what was a dismal performance from the Bit O’Red, Dave Robertson’s side trailed 3-0 at half-time, flickered briefly in the 60th minute when substitute Mathews Stevens netted from close-range, but then conceded twice more in the second period.

Chris MacManus to take father’s Council seat

SINN FEIN: Cllr Thomas Healy (left) with retiring Cllr Sean MacManus and his replacement Chris MacManus.

SINN Féín have confirmed that Chris MacManus will take over his father Sean’s council seat.

The news comes following Sean MacManus’ official retirement from public life at last month’s meeting of Sligo County Council.

Regional organiser for Sinn Féín, Eamon Nolan said, “Over the last number of weeks, since Seán announced his intention to step down, the party regionally put in place a process to select a new councillor. This culminated two weeks ago with a selection convention attended by over a hundred members from across the Sligo Municipal Council area. The only candidate endorsed and put forward by several party branches in the Council area was Chris MacManus. At the convention, he was proposed by Cllr Thomas Healy and seconded by the Chair of Sligo Sinn Féin, Stephen Conway. Delegates unanimously supported Chris’s nomination.”

Eamon Nolan also paid tribute to the outgoing Cllr Sean MacManus.

While we want to wish Chris well in his new position as a member of Sligo County Council, we also want to pay tribute to outgoing Councillor Seán MacManus, who was an outstanding public servant for nearly a quarter of a century. We look forward to Seán playing a key role in the continued growth of Sinn Féin in County Sligo,” he said.

Chris MacManus (43) previously served fifteen years as a Councillor on Sligo Borough Council and came close to winning a Dáil seat at last year’s General Election.

He is also known for his participation in campaigns such as the Right2Water, Palestinian Solidarity, the Marriage Equality Referendum, and Peace & Reconciliation.

Recently, he also chaired the County Sligo 1916 Centenary Committee.

Sligo’s Tesco staff calls off strike

SLIGO’s Tesco store has called off its strike.

The store’s staff, along with staff in Tesco in Ballina, were due to go on strike on Valentine’s Day (tomorrow) following a call from the Mandate Trade Union which suggested workers strike.

However it was announced earlier today that staff in both Sligo and Ballina were not going to go on strike resulting in eight stores of the 24 balloted rejecting Mandate’s call for strike.

All Tesco stores will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, February 14 for business as usual.

Tesco condemned the call by Mandate this morning for customers to shop in competitor supermarkets which do not recognise trade unions.

Additionally, Tesco calls on Mandate to accept the Labour Court Recommendation which affect 250 of the 14,500 staff in Tesco.

Meanwhile in the past hour, Mandate have released a statement saying that staff at Tesco cannot go on strike due to issues surrounding a ballot among staff.

“The situation in these two stores is that staff are going to be re-balloted in the coming days due to a technical error made in the original ballot. As a result of this error, it would not be legal for staff in Sligo and Ballina to take part in the strike and this is the only reason why strike action will not be proceeding in those two stores at this point in time. Mandate are now making plans to re-ballot these two stores as soon as possible,” Gerry Light, Mandate Assistant General Secretary said.

Sligo hold on for narrow Tipp win

Allianz Football League

Sligo 2-14, Tipperary 1-16

FIRST-half goals from Kyle Cawley and Niall Murphy were the key scores for Sligo in their one-point defeat of 14-man Tipperary, 2-14 to 1-16, at a bitterly cold Semple Stadium, Thurles, on Sunday.

Despite not scoring for the last 25 minutes – which included 10 minutes of additional time – Sligo just about held on, having earlier had leads of nine points and 10 points.

Tipperary, who were reduced to 14 players in the 45th minute when Jimmy Feehan was shown a second yellow card by referee Niall Ward, scored 1-6 to end up within a point of the visitors.

Well-known Sligo duo release first album together

BROTHERS IN MUSIC: Seamie O’Dowd (left) and Kieran Quinn have their first album together “Melodic Reflection” which will be launched on February 25 in the Hawk’s Well Theatre.

By Robert Cullen

One is a guitarist’s guitarist. One is a band leader. One is a multi-instrumentalist who can play everything from traditional and rock, to blues and jazz.

One is a piano player who is equally as versatile.

Seamie O’Dowd and Kieran Quinn will both be known to anyone with even a passing interest in the live music scene in Co. Sligo.

They have recorded and released solo albums. They have performed as guest musicians on many more recordings. They have appeared on stages large and small, from the Hawk’s Well to a small corner of Connolly’s Pub.

And now Kieran and Seamie have recorded an album together. An album which will be launched on Saturday, February 25 at 8pm in the Hawk’s Well Theatre.

“Melodic Reflection” contains 13 tracks which showcase a combined sound the duo have honed from two years of performing together in a Monday night residency, first in Furey’s Pub on Bridge Street, and more recently in the aforementioned Connolly’s Bar on Markievicz Road.
“We first started talking about doing something together after a night in the Hawk’s Well, it must be about three-and-a-half years ago – around late 2013 – when I launched my first album,” says Kieran Quinn, the former Sligo Senior footballer, who gave up his GAA career to pursue a greater passion – for teaching and playing music.

“Seamie played on a track on that album and he was in for the night [of the launch] and he played on a few more songs there.”

Seamie O’Dowd continues the story: “Then Kieran played on my album the following year. He played on a few tracks on the album. It was probably from those two things that we started to think maybe there is something here that we can plough so we started playing Furey’s every Monday night and that continued on to here [Connolly’s Bar] when Paul O’Donnell moved camp over here.”

More details on Seamie and Kieran’s album launch night and the return of the much loved Theme Night can be found in this week’s Sligo Weekender- in shops now.
