SLIGO Rovers boss Owen Heary admits that he will be facing a selection headache for the start of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Saturday week, March 7, when Rovers host Cork City at The Showgrounds.
Given the favourable impression made by his first team squad in their five pre-season games to far, Heary is still unsure what his ideal starting 11 should be.
Rovers will complete their pre-season schedule this Saturday when Athlone Town come to The Showgrounds (7.45pm).
Heary said: “I have an idea [of the team to play against Cork City] in my mind. I have to sit down with the [coaching] staff to talk about it.”
“There are still one or two positions up for grabs and it is up to whoever comes in to keep their place. You can see they are all fighting to get in there because we are scoring goals, wingers are creating chances, midfielders are getting on the ball and playing well.”
“Defensively, we kept a clean sheet [against Finn Harps] and I was pleased with that,” he added.
For Saturday’s game against Athlone, full-back Alan Keane should be OK to feature while winger Sander Puri is being assessed as to regards his match fitness and is probably unlikely to feature – the Estonian international picked up a hamstring injury in last weekend’s win over Finn Harps. Centre-back Jeff Henderson is expected to be available.
