A gang who “specialise in breaking into churches” is believed to be responsible for burglaries at two churches in Sligo in the past week.

The first break-in, at one of Sligo’s best known churches, has resulted in loss and damage estimated at up to €10,000.
Drumcliffe Church, which is visited by thousands of visitors every year because of its connection to WB Yeats, was broken into on Thursday night-Friday morning, while Ransboro Catholic church was burgled in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Following the Ransboro break-in gardai issued a community text alert asking people to be on the lookout for a Citreon Berlingo van, and added: “The occupants of this vehicle specialise in breaking into churches.”
Little damage was caused in Ransboro incident and only a “minimal amount of money” was taken.
