SLIGO Municipal District were given a presentation on Monday of national plans for the 1916 Easter Rising Centenary Celebrations.

PRESENTATION: John Concannon.
PRESENTATION: John Concannon.

The presentation was given by the man dubbed ‘Mr 1916’ by the Irish Times, John Concannon, who is himself a Sligo man.

Concannon is the government’s director for Centenary celebrations, and holds a director position in Fáilte Ireland.

The Sligo native came under fire however, following his presentation when the video which launched the project in November came in for criticism from some councillors.
Sinn Féin Cllr Sean MacManus called the video a “debacle”.

“The video was pathetic. It made me embarrassed to be an Irish person,” Cllr MacManus commented.

Cllr MacManus went on to say that the video was a ‘slap’ in the face to Sligo people. Meanwhile, Independent Socialist Cllr Declan Bree welcomed the celebrations focus on the proclamation as a focal point for national celebrations.
