Parade won’t survive without donations

Preparations for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade are under way, but the importance of donations from the public are being stressed ahead of next week’s celebrations.

COMMITTEE: Members of the Sligo St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee Tommy MacSharry, Roddy McGuinn, Bernard Hayes, Eddie Watters, Cassandra Mooney, Cathy Fletcher, Deirdre Healy-McGowan pictured with Mayor of Sligo Municipal District Cllr Thomas Healy.

Parade-goers are encouraged to support the parade by making a small donation to a bucket collection on the day, as Chairperson of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee, Deirde Healy-McGowan, explained.

“Without people putting money in that bucket collection on the day, the parade would not be able to survive. That bucket collection done on the day is to keep the parade going for the following year. All people have to give to the collection is €1 per person and that would save the parade year on year.”

The parade is considered hugely important and that a place such as Sligo must be in a position to hold one.

“We did a bucket collection last week for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and there were two elderly ladies giving us money and I was explaining to them that we nearly lost the parade last year due to lack of funding and they were astounded,”Deirdre said.

“It would really drain the heart out of the people of Sligo when you look at other places like China, India and Dubai holding a parade and if the people didn’t have a parade to celebrate they probably wouldn’t even bother getting out of their beds if it wasn’t for the parade.”

Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming parade are entering their final stages with the big day coming in just one week.

“Preparations are in full swing at the moment. We have a lot of applications in already. Last year we had an outstanding number of participants so this year we hope for more again. We have a couple of surprises in line too, every year we try to something a little bit different in the parade to make it exciting and this year will be no different.”

The theme for this year’s parade is 1916 Commemorations. Applications must be made online at stpatricksdaysligo.com.

Following the parade, Sligo Inter-cultural Forum will be holding a celebration in Gilooly Hall.

The event is open to all. For more information contact Kebba at 086-1918758 or Cathy on 083-8405494.

An evening for Fred Finn

A very successful commemorative evening was held in South Sligo on February 27 to honour the great fiddle player Fred Finn who was from Kiltycreen in Killavil.

DSCF0980
Apart from his unique ability as a fiddle player he was known as a character with an exceptional wit and is clearly still missed by all those who knew him even though it is 30 years since his death on January 26, 1986.

The commemorative evening was attended by Fred’s sisters Bea and Tilly and many of his extended family members who travelled long distances to be in attendance.

The evening commenced with a special mass celebrated by Fr. James McDonagh in the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Killavil.

This was followed by refreshments in the Coleman Irish Music Centre in Gurteen where afterwards a presentation was given by Philip Duffy on the life and music of his friend and mentor.

The evening was rounded off with a massive lively session of music in the Róisín Dubh, Gurteen hosted by Jacky McGowan. In attendance were many of the musicians who knew and played with Fred during his life.

The evening was particularly successful in that it introduced a new generation of musicians and music lovers alike to the distinctive, unique, traditional style of fiddle playing from South Sligo.

Countdown for dog owners to microchip

Dog owners and breeders in the Republic of Ireland have until March 31 to comply with new laws which make it compulsory to have all dogs microchipped and registered with a Government-approved database such as www.fido.ie.

As part of the new legislation dog owners must also have a certificate from the database provider to prove that the dog is properly microchipped and registered. Dog owners must also keep their contact details up to date and register any change of contact details or change of ownership on the database.

National Microchipping Month has been moved to March this year to help raise awareness amongst dog owners and breeders about the new legislation.
If you haven’t microchipped your dog, now is the time to speak to your vet.

Dog owners across the country can avail of free microchipping at over 200 participating veterinary practices as part of a Nationwide Microchipping Month, supported by FIDO and Dogs Trust and available on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

A sterile microchip is the size of a grain of rice.  It is inserted painlessly under the skin between the dog’s shoulder blades and takes seconds to complete, meaning a dog can be in and out of a veterinary practice within a few minutes.  The microchip is designed to last the lifetime of the dog.

For a nationwide list of participating vets see www.dogstrust.ie/whats-happening/events/.

You can find out more at www.ncm.ie and on Facebook at National Chipping Month.

Owners of dogs already chipped are invited to check that their details are correctly registered on an approved database free of charge at www.chipcheck.ie.
It is now illegal to buy or take ownership of a pup that is not microchipped and registered on an approved database such as www.fido.ie and that does not have a Certificate from the database to prove this.

Under legislation it is now compulsory for all puppies to be microchipped and registered with a Government approved database such as www.fido.ie before the age of 12 weeks – or before they are moved from their birth home.

You must inform a Government approved database when you buy, sell, take ownership or transfer ownership of a dog.

The compulsory microchipping of dogs and new certification of the microchipping process with an authorized database such as fido.ie will have big animal welfare benefits and is good for dog owners too.

If you love your dog you will want to do everything possible to protect it from getting lost.  When a dog is lost, microchipping can help its owner to be found quickly as possible, which reduces the stress and trauma for the dog as well as for the owner and their family.

Every year thousands of dogs are put to sleep in Irish pounds.  Many of these were healthy, well-adjusted pets. Where compulsory microchipping of dogs has been introduced in other countries there has been a drastic reduction in the number of animals destroyed in pounds because their owners can not be identified.

Mandatory registration and certification will help families to identify whether they are sourcing a pup from a reputable breeder.

The new laws will also help to regulate transportation of pups and dogs between countries, which is good for animal welfare and also for health in terms of disease control.

Team Prediction: Sligo Rovers vs Shamrock Rovers

With Saturday’s kick-off fast approaching there will be much debate over Sligo Rovers starting line-up against Shamrock Rovers.

COMPETITION: Jimmy Keohane is one of a number of players who will be vying for a place in Saturday's team.
COMPETITION: Jimmy Keohane is one of a number of players who will be vying for a place in Saturday’s team.

For last year’s opener against Cork City, our reporter Alan Finn gave his prediction, getting nine out of 11 correct. He is back with his 2016 prediction, hoping for a full house on this occasion.

MICHAEL SCHLINGERMANN
Despite being impressed by the performances of Ciaran Nugent,  I suspect Dave Robertson will stand by his earlier statement of Michael Schlingermann being his preferred number one. His league experience for such an important game also swings this decision.

TOBI ADEBAYO-ROWLING
Right-back was a tough call last season, and this year has proven to be no easier. Tobi Adebayo-Rowling and Gary Boylan have both shown the often similar strengths of their play during pre-season, but I suspect the ex-Peterborough Utd man will get the nod.

TIM CLANCY
He was pivotal in Rovers survival in 2015, Clancy will now be looked to as a key player in the club’s revival. Clancy looks to have picked up from where left off last season by turning in some rock solid performances in defence and also demonstrated a previously unexpected ability as a free-kick taker.

MICK LEAHY
The former UCD man has looked sharp upon his arrival at The Showgrounds and there are early signs of a very reliable partnership being formed with Clancy which stalwart Gavin Peers will need to be on top of his game to break up this year.

REGAN DONELON
An obvious choice, Donelon is the club’s only recognised left-back, but is quickly proving to be a reliable one. Donelon’s form after returning from his loan at Finn Harps last year was one of the highlight’s season and 2016 will prove to be an important one in his development.

CRAIG RODDAN
A no-nonsense midfielder who won’t hesitate to win possession with a hard-hitting slide tackle or two probably best describes the Danny Ventre-esque Roddan. The ex-Liverpool trainee is likely to sit in the hole and offer an extra layer of the defence while also proving to have the capacity to deliver defence-splitting passes on the break.

JORDAN RICHARDS
An exciting talent, Richards has been impressive in pre-season. The Notts County loanee is a very tidy midfielder and is likely to have a bit more freedom to roam while Roddan holds the fort deep in midfield.

JIMMY KEOHANE
Despite only being in his mid-20s, Keohane brings a wealth of experience to this team having played over 100 games across the 3rd, 4th and 5th tiers of English football in recent years. The former Exeter City man also has an eye for goal and isn’t afraid to run at defences.

KIERAN SADLIER
The standout player of pre-season, Sadlier will no doubt be earmarked as The Bit O’Red’s key man on Saturday. The winger’s ability to take on players could trouble the best of defenders. He also has looks to be a very tireless worker and is a capable free-kick and penalty taker.

PHIL ROBERTS
Despite arriving late in pre-season, you get the sense that Robertson has plans for the forward from the get go. The striker looks lively and willing to contribute to every attack. Despite his limited game time in recent memory, he looks relatively fit and ready going into the new season.

JAANAI GORDON
Gordon will probably be looked to as the main source of goals for Rovers this season. Despite his young age, Gordon has shown in pre-season that he has the presence of mind the make the right runs and be in the right place to pounce on mistakes, as seen on more than occasion against Derry City in pre-season.

We need a united team

While opinion remains divided on the likely shape of the next government there appears to be agreement between the four TDs elected to represent Sligo Leitrim that a united approach is needed for the good of this region.

Marc Mac Sharry celebrates his election.

Following their election after last weekend’s marathon two-day count at the Clarion Hotel in Sligo, all four spoke of the need for more resources for the constituency so that this area can share in the recovery being talked of in the east of the country.

RISING: Historian and RTE presenter Myles Dungan will speak on the 1916 Rising in Sligo library on Monday next. Photo: Adrian Donohoe.

The package, entitled “Paths to Freedom” will be presented in Tubbercurry Library at 10.30am by historians Oliver Fallon, Ian Kenneally and RTE presenter Turtle Bunbury.

Then at 7pm in Sligo Central Library in Stephen Street, well known historian, writer and presenter Myles Dungan and historian Maurice O’Keeffe will give the presentation.

Both events are completely free to the public, but due to limited space, booking is essential. Phone 071-9111721 to reserve your seat.

“Paths To Freedom” is aimed at explaining the many “shades of green” that existed in the run-up to the Easter Rising, and to show that the so-called ‘long decade’, 1912-1923, was a pivotal decade in our nation.

Fronted by RTE broadcasters Myles Dungan and Turtle Bunbury, the event focuses on the changing nature of Irish life and politics in the years leading up to independence, and explains that the Rising was part of a wider narrative, not the whole story.

Meanwhile, Pegasus Consulting, who put together “Paths To Freedom” will bring their new musical production “The Count, The Countess & The Tommy” to King House in Boyle, Co. Roscommon (in May) and The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon (September) as part of a limited nationwide tour.

The show, written by Myles Dungan, will feature the music of Count John McCormack, sung by baritones Simon Morgan and Brendan Mac Quaile and Mezzo-Soprano Lisa Lambe.

Fred Finn memorial event

January 26, 1986 saw the shock passing of one of Sligo’s finest traditional musicians, Fred Finn.

LEGACY: Celebrated Sligo musician, the late Fred Finn
LEGACY: Celebrated Sligo musician, the late Fred Finn

He was born in Kiltycreen, Killavil in 1919 and spent practically all of his life working and playing music in South Sligo and the surrounding areas.

One of Fred’s friends and students, Philip Duffy, announced details of a special commemoration for the man, to be held at the end of this month.

“Those that knew Fred will know that the we lost much more than a great fiddle player on that fateful day,” said Philip. “He was first and foremost a ‘character’ that simply could not and has not been replaced. His sense of fun, his witty stories, his gentleman attributes equally made the man what he was.

“Above most others his passing has left a massive void within the fraternity of musicians in the area. But still when the music is played his name invariably surfaces and Fred is spoken of in the most affectionate tones as if he were still with us.”

Fred Finn of course was a musician who epitomised the true Sligo style of fiddle playing. His name is intrinsically linked with the great flute player Peter Horan and the combination of their musical styles and personalities is widely recognised as producing some of the finest duet playing ever to be recorded.

Unbelievably 30 years have now passed since Fred’s untimely death and to mark this significant date ‘An Evening with Fred’ is being organised for Saturday, February 27.

It will begin with a special commemorative evening mass in Killavil Church at 6pm celebrated by Fr. James McDonagh. Refreshments will be available in the Coleman Irish Music Centre in Gurteen from 7.15pm which will be followed at 8pm by a Presentation ‘Fred Finn Musician & Mentor’ given by Philip Duffy.

This will feature rare solo recordings and an insight into Fred’s background and influences. Finally a session of music will take place in the Roisin Dubh, Gurteen which will include many of those musicians that knew and played with Fred himself.

This is an opportunity for friends and musicians alike to meet and reminisce while at the same time it is an opportunity for a new generation of music lovers to learn and listen to one of Sligo’s most famous sons.

Perry dispute now in the past says Taosieach

Taoiseach Enda Kenny was very keen to try to gloss over the controversy of sitting Sligo TD John Perry’s failure to get a nomination and the subsequent High Court action by Mr Perry to be added to the ticket.

MEET AND GREET: Ronnie Conlon (Avalon Centre) sharing jokes with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tony Mc Loughlin (TD), Paul Tolan, Heather Humphries (Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht), and Gerry Reynolds.
MEET AND GREET: Ronnie Conlon (Avalon Centre) sharing jokes with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tony Mc Loughlin (TD), Paul Tolan, Heather Humphries (Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht), and Gerry Reynolds.

Questioned about it at a press conference for local media at the Sligo Park Hotel yesterday, Wednesday, morning, Mr Kenny said: “That’s past.”

He added: “We have our team now, John, Gerry and Tony. Every constituency is a battlefield and every seat is a challenge. Even in my constituency, and in every constituency, there are always political rivalries.”

When it was pointed out that those rivalries don’t generally end up in the High Court, he said: “That matter was resolved and dealt with and John Perry is a member of the Fine Gael team here in Sligo, Leitrim, south Donegal and west Cavan”.~

Asked can Fine Gael hold their two seats here, he replied confidently: “Yes” and went on to elebatorate why, citing Fine Gael’s policies to continue the economic recovery. The issue was raised again at a press conference for national media in the Avalon Centre.

However, Mr Kenny dismissed the question as “irrelevant”. He said they now had “a formidable trio” and said: “It is going to be a very enthusiastically fought election here.” For his part John Perry was also keen to regard the matter as water under the bridge.

“It was political, it was never personal. I respect him as the leader of the party. He is doing a wonderful job”, he told the Weekender.

Indeed he said that he didn’t hold Mr Kenny “personally responsible” for what happened. He said it was party general secretary Tom Curran, but he said he didn’t hold “any animosity towards him either”.

Mr Kenny was accompanied at the Avalon Centre by Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys to launch Fine Gael’s plans for Supporting Older People, promising an increase in the State pension of €25 a week by 2021, an increase in the living alone allowance, a cap on prescription charges at €17.50 and enhanced supports for older people to help them live independently in their own homes.

They were welcomed to the Avalon centre by manager Paul Toland, who pointed out that the centre had been in operation since 1961 and provided a day care programme four days a week for about 80 older people. And he said that including the various other activities in the centre they catered for people from as young as 3 up to their oldest participant who was 100.

Gerry Adams in town for rally

Sinn Féín president Gerry Adams visited County Sligo this week to support local candidate Chris MacManus, one of two Sinn Fein hopefuls in the four-seat Sligo-Leitrim constituency.

CANDIDATE: Gerry Adams and local Sinn Fein general election candidate Chris MacManus.

Mr Adams, himself a TD for Louth attended a rally to support Mr MacManus’ campaign in the Sligo Park Hotel on Tuesday night which was attended by around 300 supporters. And on Wednesday he unveiled a new billboard in Collooney highlighting the emigration figures from County Sligo in recent years.

While in Collooney, Deputy Adams also spoke on Ocean FM and addressed comments he recently made about the Special Criminal Court.

He claimed that his comments had been “hyped out of all proportion” and it was a ploy used to score political points.

“We’re talking about organised crime which can be tackled and it’s not us [Sinn Féín] that have been soft on crime. It is the government which has allowed conditions to prevail where these gangs think that they are above the law.”

At the rally in the Sligo Park Hotel, Mr Adams had outlined the Sinn Féin strategy for the constituency and pledged that his party would not form a government as a junior partner. Also in attendance on the evening were outgoing Sinn Fein TD Micheal Colreavy who is not seeking re-election and Chris MacManus’ running mate, Leitrim’s Martin Kenny.
