The Dunnes Stores workers have demonstrated real leadership to every low-paid worker in the country, a demonstration in Sligo on Friday evening was told.

Dunnes Stores workers, shop stewards from the Mandate Trade Union and local public representatives, marched from the Market Yard to Dunnes Stores on Cranmore Road where a petition was delivered to management.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Declan Bree said: “The Dunnes workers campaign for decent work and decent income is not only for themselves, but for their families and their work colleagues too.  They have demonstrated real leadership to every low-paid worker in the country.”

The Independent Socialist councillor said: “No worker should have to worry about how many hours they’ll get on a week-to-week basis.

No employer should have the ability to remove a worker’s capacity to feed their family simply by cutting hours arbitrarily.

“Everybody in our society should have a level of income which provides them with a minimum standard of living.   And a workers’ right to be represented by a trade union of their choice should not simply be an option for any company to accept or dismiss at their discretion.”
