Spectators can get up close and personal with 180 of the finest cars on the planet until 7pm and then enjoy the unique festival atmosphere that Cannonball is renowned for.

The action packed Supercar spectacle is held in aid of the Make-a-Wish Foundation. It is coming back to Sligo after a huge welcome in 2014 and excitement is mounting. Sponsored by Manhattan Popcorn, Cannonball goes up a gear once again with 180 supercars and over 150,000 spectators expected to line the streets all over Ireland.

Soap stars Ryan Thomas from Coronation St and Adam Thomas from Emmerdale will be joining celebrity cannonballers this year and some of the most unique cars in the world are being shipped in for the event this year.

The gleaming convoy will drive through 820km of Irish open roads through Dublin, Leitrim, Sligo, The Wild Atlantic Way, Killaloe, Killarney, Cahir and finishing in Wexford.

The gleaming convoy will leave Sligo at 10.30am on Saturday so spectators can enjoy the excitement and spectacle once again.

As well as the cavalcade of Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins and more are three even more exclusive hypercars, a Pagani Zonda, a Koenigsegg and a Porsche Carrera GT. These three alone are worth €4 million.

As well as the supercars, some of the novelty vehicles confirmed for Cannonball this year include an authentic DeLorean complete with Doc and Marty McFly, An NYPD Car with full kit, Smokey and the Bandit Truck, The Ghostbusters car and a most unusual Top Gun-inspired car.

Third ‘Night at Crumlin’

The third annual Night For Crumlin takes place in 5th on Teeling on Friday, September 11, boasting a line up of live acts and DJs to thrill music fans.

LEGEND: Sligo guitarist Seamie O'Dowd will headline the gig.
LEGEND: Sligo guitarist Seamie O’Dowd will headline the gig.

Back in 2013 the first Night For Crumlin raised vital funds for the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin. The hospital treats sick children from all over the country.

The contributions received on the night will go towards the foundation that provides the outstanding paediatric care and also the research needed to help our nation’s sick children. The Foundation has continued to grow and evolve by raising funds for capital projects, state of the art medical equipment, research programmes and further education investing largely through your generous support. Last year the event was able to raise €1,400 for the hospital and it is hoped that this year will be an increase on that.

To this end, organiser Jodi McCaffrey, has put together a fantastic line-up of local talent. Legendary Sligo musician Seamie O’Dowd and his son Rory will be performing, as will Sligo’s very own rock god Tabby Callaghan. Nirvana tribute band In Bloom, new to the Sligo scene but with members who have lots of experience, will be delving into the iconic grunge sound of the 1990s on the night.

There is more still. Darktown, Collette Sheerin, Peter Mooney and Daniel Melly will all be performing, and the night will end with Sligo DJ PC spinning tunes into the early hours.

The cost of admission for all this entertainment is just €10, but further donations for this very worthy cause will be more than welcome. Doors open at 9pm and the music will start just a short time later.

Alton to play at Sligo Live

Iconic Irish traditional group Altan will be performing as part of Sligo Live on Sunday night, October 25 in the Hawk’s Well Theatre.

THREE DECADES: After 35 years together, Altan continue to expand their musical horizons.
THREE DECADES: After 35 years together, Altan continue to expand their musical horizons.

The group were revealed as the latest addition to the Sligo Live line-up in the same week that the new Hawk’s Well brochure, from September to December, was launched. Altan are on stage at 8pm and tickets are €20 (with a special price of €10 for u16s).

Altan remain one of the world’s foremost Irish traditional groups and are one of the most successful. After nearly 35 years together, they were ready to flex their musical boundaries in their latest project. Altan fused their traditional Irish music, Donegal fiddling and Gaelic singing traditions, with American roots music, particularly that of the Appalachian bluegrass fiddle.

“The music on this album explores the influence of Appalachian music on Irish music,” says lead vocalist, fiddler, and founding member Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan’s new album “The Widening Gyre” – their first full album recorded in Nashville.

“The title ‘The Widening Gyre’, taken from W.B. Yeats’s collection of poetry, depicts the spiral of life, widening and embracing the new. It has an innate energy and that idea is reflected in the album’s music,” says Mairéad.

The Widening Gyre straddles time as it manages to remind listeners of the ancient bond between Irish and Appalachian music while at the same time breaking new ground through collaborations between masters of American roots music and Celtic music.

Tickets are available from www.sligolive.ie and www.Ticketmaster.ie, all Ticketmaster outlets and Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo (071-9161518).

Great Value weekend tickets which include seats at all Sligo Live 2015 performances: including Rufus Wainwright, The Waterboys and Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, plus 80 performances over 6 days are also on sale for €136.00.

Fleadh could be back in 2018

The Fleadh could return to Sligo in 2018 and if the local committee submit a proposal to host the event, it would be given serious consideration.

FLEADH: Three young musicians perform during last week’s Fleadh Cheoil.

Project Manager with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Bernard O’Sullivan said “It could come back as quickly as two years.

“The likelihood is it’s going to Ennis in 2016-2017. There’s no reason in the world why [Sligo couldn’t get it again], if they put in a very good bid.”

The Sligo Fleadh Committee have been reflecting on a very successful event, but say the clamour to hold an All Ireland Fleadh now will be even greater.

“The Fleadh could return, but there will likely be a very competitive process for the coming years as more and more towns become interested,” Fleadh committee member Micheal O’Domhnail said.

“It certainly helps the Sligo cause that this year and last went so well and it’s also satisfying to have such enthusiasm shown by Comhaltas, but we’ll have to see what the future may bring… there’s a long way to go before we decide what the next step might be.”

Sligo actress worked with Bond girl on new movie

A Sligo actress. who has been making waves on our TV screens, is to star in a new international film which recently finished shooting in Ireland and Belgium.

STAR: Sligo actress Alva Trill pictured here in the TV3 drama Red Rock.

“Brother” stars Elva Trill and well known model and actress Alison Doody as a daughter and mother caught up in a tale of love, revenge and greed.

Alison has herself starred in several blockbusters, playing opposite Roger Moore in the Bond film “A View To A Kill” and starring as the love interest of both Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in the third Indiana Jones film, “The Last Crusade”.

Elva’s star has been on the rise for the past two years, but her big break came in the TV3 drama series “Red Rock” last year. The 24-year-old also has a small part in Jim Sheridan’s new film “The Secret Scripture”, which was partly shot on location in the North West.

And the Ballymote actress will be back on our TV screens next year in RTE’s highly-anticipated period drama “Rebellion” about the 1916 Easter Rising, which will be broadcast next year on the 100th anniversary.

Recently, Elva revealed what it was like to work with Alison Doody. “Alison was lovely, she’s so beautiful in person. We had to do scenes where she was very maternal and warm and you could see it came so naturally to her because that’s what she is.

“She was very supportive. When I was questioning myself, I remember her coming over to me and telling me I did well, which was amazing to have that encouragement.”

“One of the scenes we did was very emotional for her and she just gave it socks every single time,” Elva said.

“There wasn’t one moment when she faltered. She hit every nail on the head. It was a pleasure to work with her.”

Ballisodare cyclist sets Irish record

RECORD BREAKER: Sandra Deery cycled almost 400 miles in 24 hours.
RECORD BREAKER: Sandra Deery cycled almost 400 miles in 24 hours.

A Sligo woman has set a new Irish record in the 24-hour cycling time trials in England.

Sandra Deery took part in the Mersey Roads 24 Hour cycle last month where she clocked up almost 400 miles.

This was her second time to compete after falling just short of the required distance in 2014.

“I did it last year and there is no record in the discipline, but Cycling Ireland told me I had to do at least 384 miles before they would consider it. I didn’t make that target last year, but I decided to go back and do it again this year and I got 394 miles so it will be an Irish Ladies’ record for the 24-hour time trial,” she explained.

“It is an organised event every year called ‘Mersey Roads’ which has taken place for the last 90 years. Each rider heads off at minute intervals and you go on fixed curcuits which form the basis of the race at different times of the day.”

What makes this feat all the more impressive for the Ballisodare native, who is currently stationed in Ballina as a member of the Gardai, is the fact that she had just returned from a long sporting absence just two years ago.

“This was my biggest win yet, I was involved in cycling as a teenager and I done alright then, but I have only gotten back into it in the last couple of years and this was the one I had been working towards, there was a lot of training involved in it but that was main aim and thankfully I got it.

“I started off in the triathlon club when I got back in the sport, then I joined the cycling club. I raced for the Garda Cycling Club as well, but I also race locally with Bottecchia Racing Club where I have done a lot of my training for this.”

After her recent success, Sandra has no plans to return to the UK for any challenges in the near future, opting to cycle locally instead.

“I am still recovering from the 24-hour race. I will be looking at doing shorter time trials over shorter distances and competing locally, but I have no plans to race in England next year.”

More Sligo Live acts announced

Two more acts have been announced for the Sligo Live music festival in October.

SKA STARS: Pauline Blacks and Gaps Hendrickson will perform with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra at Sligo Live.
SKA STARS: Pauline Blacks and Gaps Hendrickson will perform with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra at Sligo Live.

Irish band The Jimmy Cake will play support to the legendary Waterboys, while Ska duo Pauline Black and Gaps Hendrickson will perform on the same stage as Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

Dublin experimental collective The Jimmy Cake will support The Waterboys in the Knocknarea Arena on the Saturday night, October 24.
The band, formed in 2000, quickly garnered a reputation for their ferocious and semi-improvised live performances, before releasing their debut album, “Brains”. Their second album, “Dublin Gone Everybody Dead”, was a much heavier affair that sowed some of the seeds now blossoming on their brand new album “Master”, the follow up to 2008’s lush and orchestral “Spectre & Crown”.
Now a trim six-piece, 2015 sees the release of The Jimmy Cake’s fourth full studio album, the aforementioned “Master”, a sharp turn left from previous work.
Their performance on Saturday, in support of The Waterboys, will be a mixture of seated and standing tickets, so make sure you get yours early. Ticket details at the end of this article.
Meanwhile, on the Sunday night, Pauline Black and Gaps Hendrickson from The Selecter will join the legendary Jools Holland and his 21-piece Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.
Because Jools will be performing a long set, there will be no traditional support slot, but instead Jools will be joined by a number of guest performers, including Pauline and Gaps.
They are the singing duo who front The Selecter, one of the most vital, visceral and important ska acts ever. The Selecter are named after the Jamacian slang for DJs. The influential 2-Tone veterans were one of the most successful ska bands of the 2-Tone era, notching up a handful of hit singles and a platinum-selling album in the British charts.
Their debut album, Too Much Pressure, remains a classic touchstone for a generation of ska lovers. Mixing punk, ska and reggae, it contains the irresistible hits “On My Radio”, “Three Minute Hero” and “Missing Words”. Too Much Pressure successfully reflected the social and political issues of the Thatcher years in Britain and gave a voice to disaffected youth across the racial divide.
This is an intimate all-seated show, and capacity is limited. If you haven’t booked your tickets, do so now to avoid disappointment.
Tickets are available from www.sligolive.ie and www.Ticketmaster.ie, all Ticketmaster outlets and Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo (071-9161518).
Great value weekend tickets which include seats at all Sligo Live 2015 performances: including Rufus Wainwright, The Waterboys and Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, plus 80 performances over 6 days are also on sale for €136.

Date for Markus Feehily’s solo album announced

Former Westlife star Markus Feehily has revealed the release date of his eagerly anticipated debut album.

ARTWORK: Sligo singer Markus Feehily will release his debut solo album "Fire" in October.
ARTWORK: Sligo singer Markus Feehily will release his debut solo album “Fire” in October.

“Fire” will be released on October 16. Feehily has been working on songs for the album since the boy band went their separate ways in 2012.

In that time he has been working with some of the music industry’s top producers on the album. He has collaborated with Mojan who has produced Emeli Sande and Sam Smith, Jim Eliot who has worked with Ellie Goulding and Nexus who has worked with Lana Del Rey.

Although it is not out for another two months, “Fire” is available for pre-order on iTunes now.

Markus described his solo album as “the complete polar opposite of what I was doing in Westlife”. The 11-track album leads off with the only single Markus has released so far “Love Is A Drug”.

“Calling my album Fire is a two sided thing,” he said. “Fire represents the dark times I went through while writing the album, but also my actual song Fire from the deluxe album is about finding new love and having the strength to pull through the tough times. So it has both positive and negative sides to it just like actual fire.”

He added: “You might think someone who’s had a 15-year career in music would think they’ve done it all. But I feel there’s so much I want to do that I haven’t done yet.

“That idea makes me feel as young as I did when I was starting out in Westlife. I’m really driven. I’m excited. And I’m ready to stand up and take charge.”
