Michael Coleman recording to be preserved

What does Sligo Master Michael Coleman have in common with 60s psychedelic rockers The Doors, indie masters Radiohead, comedy king Steve Martin or Sesame Street?

Well the answer is recordings from all of these artists feature in the latest induction into the US Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

The Library of Congress each year selects 25 recordings that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” and at least 10 years old. They then find the best existing versions of each selected record and preserve them for future generations.

And, in 2015 the Library chose, among others, a recording of two tunes – “The Boys of the Lough” and “The Humours of Ennistymon” – made by Michael Coleman.

The songs were released as a single by Michael in 1922, eight years after he first arrived in New York. In their description of Coleman, the Library of Congress said:
“Despite Coleman’s rural traditional style, the fiddler achieved unprecedented commercial success and had a long-lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Today, he remains a vital figure in Irish music. His brisk, highly ornamented playing set standards and brought traditional Irish music a level of respect it had never had before, even in Ireland.

“This 1922 coupling of two older tunes that he made distinctively his own was not his first commercial disc but proved to be his breakthrough.”

Joining Coleman in the class of 2015 is the self-title debut album from The Doors, Radiohead’s ground-breaking 1997 album “OK Computer”, Steve Martin’s Grammy Award-winning album “A Wild and Crazy Guy” as well as hit singles “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” by the Righteous Brothers, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King and “Sixteen Tons” by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Oh, and the album “Sesame Street: All-Time Platinum Favourites”.

Grange Players present Friel play this weekend

The Grange Players amateur dramatics group will present Brian Friel’s, “Philadelphia Here I Come!” over three consecutive nights, Friday, March 27 to Sunday, March 29 in The Temperance Hall in Grange (doors open 7pm, curtain up at 8pm).

STAGE: The play will be on three consecutive nights.
STAGE: The play will be on three consecutive nights.

“Philadelphia Here I Come” is a play set in the 1960’s about finding one’s place in the world, wherever that might be.

Gareth O’Donnell has decided that he does not belong in the backwater town of Ballybeg, Co Donegal, while wasting what is left of his life working for his widowed and sad father.

Gar is determined that his dreams of love and happiness will be fulfilled in America and the play is set on his last night before leaving Ireland.

Gar O’Donnell is portrayed by two characters, “Gar public” the Gar that people see and talk to and “Gar Private”, the man within, Gar’s conscience.

The focus of the play is on the interaction between the public and private personas and initially Gar public is the quiet cautious one. However as the clock ticks and the eleventh hour approaches tensions rise and frustration leaks. What about Gar’s childhood sweetheart? Will his father ever lift out of his depression and communicate with his son?

The tragedy of the play is the repressed emotions and unspoken love, but there are many light comedic moments to bring balance to the play.

The Grange Players have enjoyed preparing this production which is directed by Catherine Siberry. The cast includes Caroline McCarthy, Brian Sheerin, Paddy Davis, Niall Hever, Shauna Hoey, John Kelly, Adrian Devaney, Marie Lowe, Declan Bruen, Sean Nicholson, Joe McGurrin, Kevin Kennedy, Daniel Doherty, and Gerry Sheerin.

The production opens Friday, March 27 and continues on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 & 29. Doors open at 7.30pm with curtain up at 8.00pm. Admission is €10.

Bishop ‘regretful’ for hurt caused by his comments

THE Bishop of Elphin has spoken of his regret over comments he made on radio last week in relation to same-sex marriage.

OFFENCE: Bishop Kevin Doran issued an apology for any offence his comments on parenting may have caused.
OFFENCE: Bishop Kevin Doran issued an apology for any offence his comments on parenting may have caused.

Last week, the newly appointed Bishop likened homosexuality to having down’s syndrome or having spina bifida.

He said “It would be wrong to suggest that everything that happens, happens because God intends it. If that were the case, we’d be talking about a very different kind of God.

“It is [misleading] in the sense that what people are campaigning for is not marriage because by definition same-sex relationships includes some elements such as love, care, affection, and long-term commitment but it doesn’t include procreation and produce one of the essential dimensions of marriage.”

In his first public appearance following last week’s remarks, Dr Doran was eager to express his regret over what he had said.

He told the congregation during Mass at the Cathedral in Sligo of his regret.
“One of the things I suppose that happens in that situation is you don’t always choose your words or images as carefully as you would in a statement. I’m conscious that whatever the situation, some people were hurt by either what I said or what they thought I had said and I very much regret that,” he commented.
The Bishop’s remarks were described by Archbishop Dr Diarmud Martin, head of the Irish Catholic Church as “an unfortunate phrase”.

Dr Martin has called on members of the clergy in Ireland to not use insensitive language in speaking on the same-sex marriage debate.
In a homily he gave at Mass at the weekend, he called for a new vision for God.
“Too often we have looked on God as a relentless judge. When we think in that way, our faith becomes harsh and we become harsh within ourselves and in our interaction with others and we betray the real truth about God, that he is love.”

Last week, the Archbishop refused to comment on whether Bishop Kevin Doran still had his confidence in the wake of his remarks.

Boney M to headline Sligo Summer Festival

Disco icons Boney M, featuring Maizie Williams, will headline the Friday night of this years Sligo Summer Festival in August.

Headliners: Boney M.
HEADLINERS: Boney M.

Maizie, original singer from the very birth of Boney M in 1975, is now joined by three dynamic singers after the success of the second Boney M remixed album “The Greatest Hits of Boney M” , which included 14 tracks of the best loved songs and was remixed by the original founder of the group, Frank Farian.

It was obvious from the vast number of record sales that the magic of Boney M was still there and now being enjoyed by a new generation. Maizie thought it was time for this new audience to see the energy that goes with each and every one of the groups songs and decided that they would tour.

Audiences in Russia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Uzbekistan, and many other countries have since thrilled to the energetic visual performances of all the well loved songs.

Maizie, most definitely the M in Boney M, and the group have revitalized the songs while keeping the same lyrics, giving them a new and modern sound that will have all generations tapping their feet and moving to the new funky beat.

Boney M’s impressive set with the likes of; “Rivers of Babylon”, “Brown Girl in the Ring”, “Rasputin”, “Mary’s Boy Child”, “Daddy Kool”, “Sunny”, “Ma Baker” and “Hooray Hooray it’s a Holi-Holiday”, guarantees this will be a night of non stop hits!

“We are honoured and delighted to add another International act to the line up for the second year running”, said Chairman of the festival, Daniel McGarrigle. “The addition last year of Sister Sledge brought many visitors from outside Sligo and this is a main objective for this year again. We hope the festival attracts people from near and far to our lovely town and county.”

Sligo Summer Festival, now in its fourth year, has already successfully hosted three hugely attended festivals in 2012, 2013 and 2014. It has attracted thousands of people in the last three years and this year could be the biggest one yet.

Previous years has seen Sister Sledge, The Riptide Movement, Ryan Sheridan, Bressie, The Saw Doctors, Sharon Shannon and Mundy headline with many other amazing Irish acts also grace the stage.

The festival runs for two nights on Friday August 7 and Saturday 8 2015, and runs just before the World Fleadh hits Sligo on Sunday August 9-16, so the crowds are expected to be massive again this year.

As with last year, there will be a minimal voluntary donation for over 14’s on the gate to help fund this Community Festival. The Sligo Summer Festival takes place again in Stephen St. Car Park, Sligo. Check out Sligo Summer Festival on Facebook for full details!

OPENING: Tiger Ireland Operations Director/Owner Gillian Maxwell said Sligo was a natural choice as the location of their 15th Irish store.

Employing six staff, the Danish brand brings its own take on Scandi-chic to Sligo. For Tiger Stores Ireland Operations Director/Owner Gillian Maxwell, who introduced the brand to Ireland just three years ago, Sligo was an obvious choice for their 15th store:
“As the second largest city in the West, Sligo is the perfect location for Tiger. Steeped in history yet with a great infrastructure, it’s a regional hub for tourism and trade, where culture and commerce mix easily, and surfers and shoppers are equally at home. We can’t wait to get there.”

“Sligo Chamber is delighted to welcome the Tiger store into Sligo’s city core at Quayside,” said Sligo Chamber CEO Paul Keyes.
“The Tiger store will add to the ever-growing mix of things to see, do and enjoy in Sligo. The role of the Chamber is to help Sligo grow and we wish the promoters every success in this exciting venture, which will add to the retail experience and offering for our many local shoppers and visitors.”

Tiger provides stylish products featuring the best of Danish design, with prices from just €1 to €30. The brand collected two of the most highly-coveted accolades at the 2014 Retail Excellence Ireland Awards, including Company of the Year and Best Small Company (under 100 employees).
