The Celtic Tenors to perform charity concert in Sligo town

The Celtic Tenors will make a long-awaited return to St John’s Cathedral in Sligo for a concert on Friday, June 26 at 8pm.

TRIO: The Celtic Tenors (l-r) Daryl Simpson, James Nelson and Matthew Gilsenan.
TRIO: The Celtic Tenors (l-r) Daryl Simpson, James Nelson and Matthew Gilsenan.

Sligoman James Nelson and fellow tenors Matthew Gilsenan and Daryl Simpson will perform in aid of the Sligo branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. They will be joined by guest performer Donna Malone.

Speaking to the Sligo Weekender ahead of their concert, James Nelson said the charity which will benefit from their performance has a very personal resonance.
“We decided this time to try to help the Alzheimer Day Care Centre in Dunally because they have been so good to my Dad since the onset of his Lewy Body Dementia in 2012.

“The Dunally Day-care Centre are incredible, are seriously under-funded and need the help. Every family sadly has some experience of dementia. It used to be a case of people ‘doting’, but now in the 21st Century there are so many labels.

“Dad is now in full-time care in Nazareth Nursing Home, and the staff there are incredible – it really is a beautiful place, and as positive as nursing homes can be. But for the last couple of years Dad went out to Dunally three or four times a week, and felt very welcome there.

“Again, the staff in Dunally are amazing, and we wanted in some way to show our appreciation for all they did for Dad, and others. Dad’s only sister Bert died with Alzheimer’s a few years back.”

And he is looking forward to returning to this particular Sligo venue too. “Having grown up in the Church of Ireland, St John’s was our family church for a hundred or so years before I was born.

“I was christened in St John’s, my sister Linda married her husband Richard in St John’s, and all our family funerals were in St John’s. The church is very close to my heart. But the three of us love performing there because it is such a beautiful setting, with a really lovely acoustic. And we are all big fans of Dean Arfon Williams also.”

So what can fans of the Celtic Tenors expect to hear on June 26? “Because of the nature of the evening, and with the link to the Alzheimer Day-care centre, “The Dutchman” is a very special song for us every night, but perhaps even more so in Sligo.

“This love-song talks about a couple towards the end of their lives, where the man is clearly suffering from some kind of dementia. Everyone joins in the chorus no matter where we perform it across the world, and it is one which always strikes a chord with many.

“On our new album, I particularly love the Dolly Parton song at the moment – no, it’s not “9 to 5” – it’s a beautiful little love-song which talks about loving someone ‘from here to the moon and back’.

“We will also of course, because of St John’s put something religious/sacred in, because of the setting, so personally that will bring me back to my childhood when I used to be part of the Kids’ choir at the Christmas Carol Services under the direction of the late organist Mabs West. On one occasion I horrifically cracked on a solo high note in “Once in Royal David City” which greatly upset me at the time…. I think I am just about over it now.”

The new album that James refers to, “Timeless”, is the Celtic Tenors’ 12th album to date. It will be released later this year. James admits that the previous albums “have covered a lot of the Irish, Celtic, Classical Crossover, even American repertoire” so something new was suggested by their record label Decca (part of Universal). “The record company suggested this time to do an album of 70s and 80s pop ballads, ones we all grew up with. As a harmony-based group. this proved (we think) to be a perfect fit, and we hope people will agree.

“On this album we have songs by Simon & Garfunkel, The Bee Gees, John Denver, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, The Seekers, Elvis and others. The repertoire may be different, but it certainly still sounds like us.”

That album will be released later this year, but after the concert in Sligo James, Matthew and Daryl will be doing something unusual, taking a break! “We usually take July off, for our own personal holidays, or indeed for my annual trip to Kenya. This year I am taking a year off from Kenya, and concentrating instead on raising money for the Kenyan kids’ university fees.

“It is so encouraging watching the kids we started out with way back in 2006/2007 now going to college and university, and graduating as nurses, engineers, teachers, and in the hotel/management industry.

“But this July I am actually going on a proper holiday and having a real break.”

He continues: “In August we are part of the big Irish Festivals in the USA, including the famous Milwaukee Irish Fest. Then in September ‘Timeless’ will be released out of Sydney and then worldwide.

“In September we are opening for Celtic Woman on their big tour of Australia, and then from October until December 23, we are touring our own show in the USA and Canada, home just in time for Christmas. And already 2016 is fairly full right up until December.”

So you better catch the Celtic Tenors in Sligo on Friday, June 26 at 8pm, because you never know when they will be back around this way again!TextThe Celtic Tenors perform in St John’s Cathedral, John Street, on Friday, June 26 at 8pm.

Tickets for the concert cost €22.50 and can be bought in advance from Liber Bookshop in O’Connell Street or online at www.eventbrite.ie. You should get your tickets in advance as there is limited capacity in the venue and the demand is expected to be high.

With an eclectic mix of ear pleasing tunes brought to you by a mixture of live acts and djs, Havin a Laugh promotes inclusivity and craic in equal measures. Camping and a light breakfast Sunday morning is included in the evening pass.

The festival site at Annaghmore is open to all passers by on Saturday, July 4 from 2-6pm.

Sligo Chamber to hold public meeting in June

Sligo Chamber of Commerce has issued an open invitation to the Sligo public to attend a meeting to discuss the economic development of the town.

The meeting “Moving Sligo Forward” will take place on Wednesday, June 24 at 7pm and comes in the wake of a tirade of abuse directed at the Chamber on social media.

The criticism came after details of a 2013 action taken by the chamber to oppose the selling of certain items at Homestore & More in Carraroe Retail Park resurfaced. The Chamber had opposed the selling of certain household items in the warehouse store, which they deemed in violation of the Sligo development plan.

Sligo Chamber’s Facebook page was inundated with critical messages from people, some of whom threatened to boycott the stores of Sligo members of the Chamber.

However, the Chamber itself refused to be drawn into a discussion, but instead said it would hold an open public meeting at which the future commercial development of the town would be discussed.

A press release issued by the Chamber on Tuesday read: “We invite all interested parties to debate the many issues relating to the economic development of Sligo, as well as the day-today activities and aims of the Chamber.

“The Chamber welcomes the chance to engage and come together with all interested parties in contributing to a constructive and frank conversation about Sligo’s future.

“We stress that everyone is welcome to attend including members of the public, local politicians, public officials and community leaders.”

The release also confirmed that Chamber President David Kiely and Chamber Chief Executive Paul Keyes will be there on the night to answer questions from the audience.

Paul Keyes said: “The core remit of the Chamber is to help Sligo grow and we welcome the chance to explain what we are doing, and to listen to other interested parties who share our ambition for the positive development of Sligo.”

The Chamber said it does intend to have an “independent moderator” to chair the meeting, so as to give as many as possible a chance to contribute.

Soup kitchen to close for second time

A soup kitchen in Sligo is facing closure for a second time in six months.

The Twist soup kitchen on High Street is to close it’s doors in two weeks following their failure to pay an outstanding electricity bill which is understood to have amounted to €3,400.

The premises was due to shut it’s doors on Tuesday morning, but an agreement to remain open for another week was reached, explained Oliver Williams who set up the kitchen in January 2013.

“It’s not closed. They (ESB) were going to shut off our electricity this morning (Tuesday) at 10.30am but we managed to re-negotiate to remain open for another week to try and raise the amount overdue.”

The kitchen is a service which provides soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee six days a week for for people who have fallen on hard times.

Mr Williams succeeded in keeping Twist open in the face of uncertainty before Christmas and is determined to re-open the outlet he describes as “vital to the community” in the near future.

“We can afford to pay our ESB bill on a weekly basis and it is an outstanding bill that has simply caught up with us and has now become unmanageable. We have had some positive calls, the local Lions club want to help us and we are appealing to the people of Sligo to get behind us and keep the kitchen open.”

Anyone who wishes to support the soup kitchen can contact Oliver directly on 087-7773845 or visit www.twistsoupkitchen.org.

The Ballinacarrow Past Pupils Band

The national school in Ballinacarrow has had an active school band for the last 40 years and today it is still going strong, with the latest generation of schoolkids learning their instruments and taking part in various events, including the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the very first band being set-up, pupils past and present were invited along to the Coach House Hotel for a day of music, memories and memorabilia.

And the former band members, now adults, also got to relive their childhood as a special performance by past band members took place on the day. The performers, some of whom hadn’t picked up their instruments in years, met the Wednesday before the event in St Larassa’s to practice for Sunday’s celebration.

Pick up a copy of this week’s Sligo Weekender newspaper for two pages of photos of the event. In shops now.

The vocals of Hugh O’Neill, the guitar talent of Rory O’Dowd, the bass playing of Keelan Kelly and the percussion of Paul Wehrly will combine each week, starting at 10.30pm to celebrate the summer. Admission is free every Thursday night.

Rory O’Dowd is back in on Friday night as he brings his ‘New Jams’ night back to 5th. Craig McMorrow (The Voice of Ireland) will join Rory on the night amongst other special guests.

Then on Saturday, The Amazing Apples bring their “A Little Sense” album tour to 5th on Teeling. Amazing Apples have landed in 2015 with some striking singles – ‘Slipping By’ and their most recent single, ‘Lullaby’ – and now the Galway outfit have released their new album.

The five-day festival highlights the best of Sligo’s food finders, growers, producers and cookers. And with 2015 being the 150th birthday of W.B. Yeats, the annual Yeats Food Trail, which is an intrinsic part of the festival, takes on added significance (see separate panel).

JP McMahon kick off this year’s Festival at The Model yesterday, Wednesday, with the opportunity to dine ‘Aniar’ style, as seen in his Michelin star rated Aniar, Eat Gastro Pub and Cava Bodega in Galway city. This year’s Festival continues until Sunday evening with events happening all over the county. In Sligo town, the Só Sligo Food Trail has tapas sized house specialities available for €5 each in 26 venues. A Cookery Book Swap in aid of NW Simon Community and topics such as beer, bees and bread will keep you fed, educated and entertained.

Other events include the World Irish Stew Championship – everybody can enter – just bring along two portions of your stew at 12.30pm on Saturday 13th to the Italian Quarter (there will be facilities to heat & serve).

‘Mourning and anger’ over death of garda

There have been calls for an independent inquiry into the tragic death of 48 years-old Garda Sergeant Mick Galvin.

And a local senator told the Sligo Weekender that the communities in Sligo, Manorhamilton and Ballyshannon are “in mourning and frankly angry at the loss of someone who in all essence was a pillar of the community here in the North West”.

The late Sergeant Galvin’s family and garda colleagues have expressed anger over an investigation by the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), worry over which it is believed led the Sligo native to take his own life on Thursday last at Ballyshannon garda station, where he was stationed.

For full details on this story see this week’s Sligo Weekender.
